A few weeks into the season Grant established himself as the team's starting power forward and one of the most promising big men in the league. Meanwhile, Brickowski missed the entire season with a shoulder injury, and Polynice replaced Causwell as the Kings' starting center ...Grant worked the hardwood on both ends of the floor. In 80 appearances (59 as a starter) he averaged 13.2 points and 7.5 rebounds ... His rebounding average ranked 31st in the NBA and was tops among rookies. (Washington's Juwan Howard, who averaged 8.4 rebounds per contest, didn't play enough games to qualify for the leaderboard.) ... Grant shot .511 from the field, 26th in the league and better than such well-respected power forwards as the Phoenix Suns' A. C. Green and the Cleveland Cavaliers' Tyrone Hill. Grant's average of 1.45 blocks per game led Sacramento, ranked 20th in the league, and topped all NBA rookies ... He played in the NBA Rookie Game at All-Star Weekend and received consideration for the league's Rookie of the Year Award at season's end ... In 1994-95 they tied for eighth in points allowed (99.2 ppg), tied for second in field-goal percentage allowed (.453), and won 11 more games than the previous season-but finished one victory short of the playoffs ... Grant, an aggressive, in-your-face player, had a hand in that improvement and has positioned himself as a player to watch. COLLEGE: Grant, who hails from the same hometown as General Ulysses S. Grant (and thereby is nicknamed "the General"), was an outstanding college player at Xavier, where he twice earned Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year honors ... Grant was an Associated Press honorable mention All-American as a junior after finishing second in the nation in field goal percentage (.654) ... But even after a superb senior season he didn't have the same name recognition as such top NBA prospects as Glenn Robinson, Jason Kidd, Grant Hill or Juwan Howard. In a predraft tournament, however, he led all NBA prospects in rebounding, prompting the Kings to take him with the eighth overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft. |
